What better way to break the silence, than to narrate my first Marriage offer. Surprised?
I always expected this sort of thing coming (if at all) from some nutcase family Uncle or Aunt pointing out that this girl would be nice for you or whatever. But from a Korean (i think) Barber (Hair Stylist if you will)? Maybe I am reading this whole thing wrong.
It was a standard conversation with the oldish Korean Lady with the usual How are you, Fine, What do you do , etc ..etc while she was snipping away at my hair.
Then she asks how long I am here to which I reply just for 3 months. She mentions that if you marry someone here you can get to stay longer or even permanently. I laugh and say that I heard of that. She rotates my chair slowly so that my back is facing the mirror and I am looking at her pretty daughter / niece snipping away at someone elses hair.
She: points at the girl. “If you marry {some name I can’t pronounce} you could stay longer. ”
Me: “Err … uhuh Interesting”. (I think I smiled) “Can you cut the hair a little shorter over there”
She : “So are you interested in marrying over here , or in your home country? ”
Me: “Doesn’t really matter. But I am too young anyway.”
Yup, I think most of you think she must have been joking. Me too. But I searched the Lady’s face for amusement, but she looked so serious. Weird. I never saw this one coming.
Just thinking out loud:
1. Why does the marriage word occur more frequently as you grow up? Don’t answer that.
2. If I am 35 and desperate to get married I know where to look. (or 26 and desperate for a Visa)
3. Nowadays haircuts get into your head.
